This guide is for ASHG 2026 attendees who live in the United States on temporary visas (such as F‑1, J‑1, H‑1B, O‑1, TN, E‑2). Your U.S. visa category does not determine your entry requirements for Canada. Canadian entry requirements depend only on your citizenship.

What You May Need to Enter Canada

  • Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) – required for travelers from visa‑required countries.
  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) – required for most visa‑exempt travelers arriving by air.
  • Passport – must be valid throughout your stay.

Your U.S. visa does not guarantee Canadian entry. You must meet IRCC travel requirements for your citizenship.

Common Scenarios

  • If you are from a visa‑required country: You likely need a TRV to enter Canada, even if you live in the U.S.
  • If you are from an eTA‑eligible country: You may need to apply for an eTA if arriving by air.
  • If you are from a visa‑exempt country: You may be able to enter Canada with your passport only.

Document Reminders

  • Carry your passport.
  • Carry proof of U.S. status (I‑94 record, visa stamp, approval notice, etc.).
  • Carry your ASHG registration confirmation.
  • Ensure your Canadian travel document matches your passport information.

Returning to the United States

Returning to the U.S. depends on your U.S. immigration status and is unrelated to Canada’s rules. Consult U.S. CBP or your international office.

Important Notes

  • ASHG cannot advise on your visa eligibility or application materials.
  • ASHG cannot contact IRCC on your behalf.
  • All immigration decisions are made solely by IRCC.
